Download

Download Sluka.

Two builds of the same reader with the same vocabulary. The first 1,000 words in each language are free on both, with no time limit and everything but the scoreboard switched on, and one licence covers every device you read on. Neither build needs a connection to look a word up: the dictionaries with English definitions are inside, which is why the files are the size they are. Definitions in another language download once, when you pick them.

Browser extension

Chrome · Brave · Edge · any Chromium browser

Add from the Chrome Web Store

Installs and updates by itself. Prefer a file? Install from a zip.

Install

  1. On the store page, press Add to Chrome (Brave says Add to Brave). In Edge, press Allow extensions from other stores at the top first.
  2. Confirm with Add extension.

The dashboard opens by itself the first time, while the dictionary is copied into the browser. Updates arrive by themselves.

Already using the zip version? The store's is a separate extension with its own storage. Back up first (Settings → Sync & backup → Back up now), add Sluka from the store, restore the backup there, then remove the zip version on the extensions page.

Android app

Android 8 and newer · phone and tablet

Download the APK 223 MB

Version 0.6.6 · sluka-0.6.6.apk
SHA-256 080d1599cef69398bf8486497ce295b72b32a939e0e6f7bb899bdcb3bfd86096

Install

  1. Open the downloaded file from the notification, or from the Files app.
  2. Android asks whether this browser may install apps. Allow it, once; it is asking because the app is not from Google Play yet.
  3. Press Install.

The app is a browser with the reader built in, and pairs with the extension over your own wifi so both hold the same vocabulary. A newer APK installs over the old one and keeps everything, because every build is signed with the same key. It is not on Google Play yet.

iPhone and iPad: not yet. The app exists and is waiting on the App Store, which has no way to sideload. Write to help@sluka.app to hear when it lands. Firefox and Safari on the computer are not supported.

Install from a zip instead

For a browser that can't reach the store, or to choose your version. The newest is here; every version since 0.6.0 is under it. A zip install doesn't update by itself.

Install

  1. Unzip it. You get one folder, sluka-extension. Keep it somewhere it can stay; the browser reads from it every time it starts.
  2. Open brave://extensions (or chrome://extensions, edge://extensions).
  3. Turn on Developer mode, top right.
  4. Click Load unpacked and choose that folder.

To update, download again, replace the folder's contents, and press the reload arrow on the extensions page. Your words are in the browser, not in the folder, and survive this.

Back up your progress first

Already using Sluka? Make sure your words are backed up before you update. Open the dashboard and go to Settings → Sync & backup. If Automatic backup is not on yet, choose a folder for it. If it is, press Back up now.

New to Sluka? There is nothing to back up yet.

Download

Older versions

Every version from 0.6.0 on stays here, for the day an update breaks something you rely on. The extension goes back the way it updates: replace the folder's contents and press the reload arrow. Android only installs an older APK after the newer app is uninstalled, which deletes its words, so back up first (Settings → Sync & backup) and restore the backup afterwards. The same goes for an extension older than 0.6.4: going back to one changes its ID, and the browser sees a new extension with empty storage.

What's new

0.6.6 18 October 2026

New

  • Your own voices: Settings → Voice → Your own voices takes a Piper voice (pick its .onnx and .onnx.json together), and its language is then spoken with it, free and offline, in place of the cloud voice. About 40 languages have free voices. On the computer and in the Android app.
  • A voice program on this computer: a new choice in Settings → Voice for a speech program you run yourself, such as Kokoro-FastAPI or AllTalk, cloned voices included. No key. It is switched on per computer, so your other devices keep their cloud voice. Computer only.
  • Choose which meanings go on an Anki card: Shift+P puts a box beside each meaning, and the card gets the ones you tick, in the order you tick them (1–9 tick from the top). On a phone, hold the panel's Anki key. P now puts every meaning on the card, not just the first three, and your own dictionaries come first.
  • The Anki clip bar on SlukaCC gets Cancel (takes the card back, and deletes it in Anki only if this pick made it), Reset, a time ruler, and −1 / +1, which take in the line before or after, in the sound and in the card's Sentence. Settings → Anki → From the video → With the sentence before and after starts the clip with both pressed. YouTube on the computer.
  • Word and sentence said on Anki cards for words you save while reading: Settings → Anki → While reading, with the cloud voice or the downloaded recordings (words only). Off to begin with. Cards from SlukaCC keep the video's own clip. Computer only.
  • Japanese pitch accent on the back of Anki cards: Settings → Anki → On the back → Pitch accent (Japanese). Off to begin with. On an older Sluka card type, Anki asks once for a one-way sync.
  • Game controller: hold L and press X to make an Anki card, and Add to Anki can go on any button in Settings → Game controller. While L is held, the D-pad moves round the clip bar and L+A presses or grabs what is marked; the clip bar is on YouTube on the computer only.
  • The Anki button (✓) on a word that already has a card opens Anki's card browser on that card. On Windows the browser can open behind other windows. Computer only.
  • Anki on another port: if AnkiConnect runs on a port other than 8765 because another program holds it, Settings → Anki takes its number. Try saves it only once AnkiConnect answers there. Computer only.
  • The meaning that fits the sentence goes first: where a word has several meanings, the one its sentence uses moves to the top. Subtitles use their own translated line; pages and books send the sentence to Google Translate once. On to begin with: Settings → Reading → Looking up words → Put the meaning that fits the sentence first.
  • Your own request for the AI check: Settings → AI check → Advanced → Your own request (up to 1,000 characters) goes with every check, and the answer shows in the word panel under "Your question", also when the verdict is "Not a word".
  • A ✎ pen next to "Save as its meaning" after an AI check lets you change the AI's meaning before saving it. Changed, it is saved as yours.
  • Font for books and Sluka's reader: Original, Sans, Serif, Monospace or any font you name. A book's Aa, the reader's new Aa button, or Settings → Reading → Font. One font for every language, or one per language.
  • Page colour in books and Sluka's reader: white, light yellow or dark. In a book it is under Aa, and replaces the Dark pages switch; if you had dark pages, they stay dark.
  • Scanned books: a PDF whose pages are only pictures, and JPG, PNG or WebP pictures, are read on your computer (OCR), so their words highlight, look up and grade like any other text. The reading model downloads once, when you press the button: about 13–26 MB the first time, and 8–21 MB for each further writing system. Every reading language but Vietnamese. Computer only.
  • Manga and comics: a .cbz opens as one book, a page for each picture in order, and Japanese manga is read bubble by bubble with a model trained on manga. Computer only.
  • Save a video's transcript to Books: the button in the transcript's header puts the whole transcript on the shelf as an article, linked to the video. A learners' track's pinyin, romaji and English rows are left out. Computer only.
  • Reading mode on ChatGPT and Gemini takes the whole conversation, every reply in order, and leaves your prompts out. Saving the chat again with more in it updates the book and keeps your place, name and bookmarks, so the longer copy reaches your phone by sync.
  • Shift+D and Shift+A while reading: in a book or Sluka's reader they go to the next or previous sentence with a frequent new or learning word, and Shift+E / Shift+Q to any new or learning word. On video, the commonest such word on the line gets a gold ring, which shows on a blurred line without giving the word away.
  • SlukaCC on Netflix, Disney+ and Crunchyroll in the Android app's Web tab. Netflix pages stay in the app instead of sending you to Netflix's own. Not yet tried with a real account on a phone: if it doesn't play or the subtitles drift, tell us on Discord.
  • SlukaCC in full screen on more players, such as VK Video and archive.org: subtitles, transcript and word panel all show, and the picture moves over for the transcript. Where the transcript has no room on the page, SlukaCC's menu has "Transcript & words" (or press W), which opens the pop-out transcript on a new Words tab. Computer only.
  • ‹F and F› buttons beside SlukaCC's line on a touch screen jump to the previous or next line with a frequent word you don't know yet, as Shift+A / Shift+D do on a computer. Off to begin with: SlukaCC's menu → More, or Settings → SlukaCC → More → Frequent-word buttons.
  • An Ignored colour in SlukaCC's Word colours: with Your own colours on, ignored words get a colour of their own on the subtitles and the transcript. It is Known's green until you pick one.
  • Chinese subtitles in the other script: a YouTube video with only 简体 subtitles offers 繁體中文 · machine in SlukaCC's track menu, and the other way round, timed the same as the original.
  • Preload sounds: a button fetches the cloud voice's sound for every new and learning word of a book (Contents → Words) or a band of Words → Most common in one go, so they play at once later. It says how many words it will send to which provider before it sends anything.
  • Words → Most common has a search box: a word, one of its forms, or a rank number takes you to it.
  • Words → Most common → Export → Choose a range… saves any range of ranks, such as 1–500 or 250–1234.
  • Your words can show Dictionary forms or Every form, whichever way the language counts. Not for Chinese, Cantonese, Vietnamese or Thai.
  • Progress → Polyglot stats: Change order puts the languages in the order you want.
  • Live chat beside the scoreboard (Progress → Scoreboard): one room for everyone. Anyone can read; writing needs a scoreboard name. Messages disappear after 24 hours, and links are not allowed. Hover over one of your own messages (tap it on a phone) for a pencil to edit it (it shows as edited) and a bin to delete it. Hide this person hides someone on your device. Not on the website.
  • A country flag before your scoreboard name, optional and changeable any time: Settings → Licence → Scoreboard → Country. It shows in the app and on sluka.app/scoreboard.
  • Russian word recordings: about 5,000 common words read by native speakers, downloaded once under Settings → Languages → Pronunciation.
  • Italian definitions in Spanish or Portuguese: Settings → Languages → Dictionary → Change definition language.
  • Yomitan dictionaries look as they do in Yomitan, with their own layout and marks. One added before this update has to be removed and added again; Settings says so.
  • Settings → Licence has a "Buy one" link for when you have no licence yet. Computer only.

Changed

  • A new install asks which language you are learning instead of assuming Chinese, and reads nothing until you answer. Existing installs are never asked.
  • Phone: a word you look up opens in a small card beside it instead of the shelf at the foot of the screen. Pull its line up for everything (level, tabs, every dictionary site, your own meaning, AI check, Anki); pull down to close it.
  • Russian meanings lead with OpenRussian's, written for learners, and about 17,600 words are added. A participle shows its own meaning after the grammar: рыда́вший — past active participle · sobbing.
  • Italian words that only pointed at another word now have a real meaning: portarvi "to bring, fetch, take, carry (+ vi: you, to you; there)", perfino "even (persino)", capivo "to understand (capire)". About 41,000 words.
  • Sentence by sentence: ← → step through the sentence's new and learning words, and A / D go to the previous or next sentence, the same keys as SlukaCC's lines. Computer only.
  • Turning on Google Translate in SlukaCC's menu says "Google Translate on this video only", since it lasts for that video.
  • Progress → Listening → History: a show you already answered offers the other answer directly ("Yes, Italian" / "Not Italian").
  • Progress keeps its switches (Total or Frequent, the numbers and graphs) when you switch language.
  • Switching English to Spanish definitions takes about 20 seconds instead of several minutes.
  • Phone: the ⋯ beside SlukaCC's line is gone; the gear on the pill opens the menu. It comes back while YouTube's "Includes paid promotion" label pushes the pill aside.
  • Arabic: ← goes on to the next word and → comes back, since the text runs right to left. On pages, SlukaCC's line, sentence by sentence, phone taps and the game controller. A / D and seeking the video stay as they were.
  • SlukaCC: with a word clicked open, resting the pointer on another new or learning word shows that word instead. Known and ignored words leave the clicked word open. Computer only.
  • Phone held sideways: the word popup over a video has smaller grade buttons and tabs, so about twice the room for meanings.
  • The word panel draws Chinese characters in the shapes of their own script: mainland shapes for simplified, Japanese shapes for Japanese.

Fixed

  • Words read no longer counts hidden or blurred subtitles, or the page under a video that is playing.
  • Words read counts the copy of a text you actually read: a web novel shown twice on one page, once in a small read-aloud box, counts the real chapter, and a short entry alone on a page (a Pokédex description) counts at all.
  • Definitions stay in the language you chose: English with Spanish definitions no longer turns half English again after a long rebuild, and the hover card shows the Spanish meaning instead of nothing or English.
  • An imported frequency list ranks each word by its line in the file (or its rank column), so море on line 482 is 482nd, not 469th. Lists imported before this need importing again.
  • Importing from LingQ, Language Reactor or a word list keeps every form of a word, also when you count by dictionary form and the word is already at its level.
  • An answer to "was this Italian?" given on the phone no longer flips back after a sync with the computer. The later answer wins on every device.
  • Your scoreboard name reaches your other devices by sync, and Find my name asks the scoreboard for it on a device sync hasn't reached. Typing your own name on a second device says it is yours, and a double click no longer says "Someone already has that name".
  • The automatic backup in Downloads mode no longer opens a Save dialog every hour when the browser asks where to save each file. It backs up once a day, pauses and says why if the browser asks, and the backup card now has a Stop button. Computer only.
  • Korean holds together: 가늘어 is 가늘다, 허약해 is 허약하다, 아이는 is 아이 + 는, 나이는 is 나이 + 는, and 의사거든요 is 의사 + the copula, not 의 + 사다.
  • Korean look-alikes: 거야, 가야해, 할 수도, 개가, 양이, 서서 and 가라 no longer open rare hanja words such as 去夜 "last night".
  • German nouns open the noun: Bräuche is Brauch, not brauchen, and Fall, Macht and Planeten in mid-sentence stop landing on verbs. "ich brauch das" still opens brauchen.
  • After Sluka updates or reloads, a YouTube tab no longer opens two popups for one click, one of them empty.
  • VK Video in full screen: clicking a subtitle word opens its word panel.
  • YouTube in a window: subtitle words in the player's bottom-right corner can be clicked again.
  • Google Drive file names no longer vanish when you hover them.
  • Phone: swiping Sluka away from recent apps stops its videos. Home and locking the screen still let them play on.
  • Settings → Languages: a long "Shared with …" label wraps inside its row instead of running off the card.
  • Scanned PDFs whose letters are fax-coded or JPEG 2000 pictures draw their ink instead of a white page.

0.6.5 15 October 2026

New

  • Karaoke mode: SlukaCC lights up each word as it is said, timed against the video's own sound. Off to begin with: SlukaCC's menu, or Settings → SlukaCC → More, which lists the 14 languages it works in. YouTube on the computer. The first time you use a language it downloads that language's speech model (30–90 MB) once.
  • Anki cards with sound and picture: a word you send to Anki from SlukaCC on YouTube gets the line's audio and the frame on screen on the back. A bar over the picture lets you trim the clip so no word is cut off. Settings → Anki → On the back → Sentence translation adds the line's translation. The first card with a clip asks Anki for a one-way AnkiWeb sync: sync your phone first, then choose Upload to AnkiWeb. Computer only.
  • Your own dictionaries: Settings → Languages → Your own dictionaries takes a Yomitan dictionary (.zip) or a table (.csv, .tsv, .txt). Its meanings show in the word panel, in place of Sluka's, above them or below them, your choice per language. They stay on the device you add them on.
  • "Continue from 12:34": on YouTube, Viki and bilibili, Sluka offers to pick a video up where you left it, also when you watched it on your other device. It never jumps by itself. Home's Continue card lists unfinished videos beside your books.
  • SlukaCC on Viki, bilibili.tv and bilibili.com, on the computer and in the app's Web tab. bilibili.com only gives subtitles to signed-in viewers.
  • SlukaCC on Disney+, following the film's own clock. It is new: if the subtitles drift or vanish, tell us on Discord.
  • Books: rename a book, sort books into folders (one level, per language) and choose several at once to move or remove. Every book has a ⋯ menu; on a computer you can drag books onto a folder. Moves, renames and deletes have an Undo (Ctrl+Z). Folders and names sync and are in backups.
  • Paste text onto the shelf: the Paste text button on the Books page turns pasted text into a book that syncs and remembers your place.
  • Sentence by sentence: in a book or Sluka's reader, the button next to Aa (or Shift+S) shows one sentence at a time, large. ← → move, T shows the translation, Esc closes. On the phone, swipe.
  • The transcript can open in a window of its own, for example on a second screen, and its side panel can be made wider by dragging its edge. A button in its header turns the video's own subtitles off while the transcript is up. Computer only.
  • Pause on lookup: Settings → SlukaCC → Pause when you look up a word stops the video when you hover, click or tap a word, and plays on when you put it away. A slider sets a delay of up to 2 seconds.
  • Japanese pitch accent in the word panel: a line over the high beats of the reading and the dictionary's number (箸 はし [1], 橋 はし [2]). On to begin with; Settings → Languages → Readings turns it off.
  • Characters tab in the word panel for Chinese, Cantonese and Japanese: each character's reading in this word, its meanings and what it is built from (灾 = 宀 roof + 火 fire). Press B, or swipe on a touch screen.
  • Readings above the text for Korean (romanization as it is said: 밥을 → ba·beul) and Arabic (Latin letters: kitāb). Off to begin with; each language has its own switch.
  • Readings now have one switch per language, so furigana can stay on in Japanese while Chinese goes without. If you had readings on, they stay on in every language.
  • Sluka follows the page's language: open a page in another language you're learning and Sluka switches to it, with a Back button. Never on video sites, which follow the video. Settings → Languages → Switch to the language a page is in turns it off.
  • Keep music out of smart tracking: every row in the Listening history has an Ignore button (Ignore Spotify, Ignore music.youtube.com). Settings → Watch & Listen lists what you ignore.
  • The amber Held chip on a video asks "Was this Chinese?" so you can answer without leaving the video. Settings → Watch & Listen says how many shows are waiting for an answer.
  • Google Translate for one video: a switch in SlukaCC's menu, for when a video's own translation doesn't line up with its subtitles.
  • Video word list: a "Not in dictionary" filter (names, noises, caption slips) with Ignore all and an Undo.
  • Save a word list as a spreadsheet (.csv) or words only (.txt), from Words → Tools or Most common → Export.
  • Words → Tools → Import from a text file can mark the words as Ignored instead of Known.
  • Ctrl+C copies the subtitle line on screen. Z peeks at the translation first, the other way round from E. A key for SlukaCC's arrow popup size (Small or Big), and Settings → Keyboard warns when two actions share a key.
  • "Add a new language" at the bottom of the language picker.

Changed

  • Add to Anki moves from F to P. A key you picked yourself stays.
  • Your own frequency list keeps every word; the 15,000-word limit is gone.
  • The ↔ key (longer or shorter word) is on every computer: click a word, press ↔, then ◀ ▶ to join it with its neighbour.
  • A long "Could also be" row folds behind a +N button. French porte, aide and livre offer their verb again (porte → porter).
  • The book reader remembers the text size between books.
  • The hover card shows a meaning you wrote yourself in full, up to 150 characters.
  • Italian dictionary rebuilt: amo is no longer filed under amaro, nor sole under solo. Italian, French and Arabic set themselves up again once after the update.
  • On Spotify's web player and other sites with cards over the video, SlukaCC's subtitles rest above them. In full screen they sit a little higher on those sites.
  • Polyglot stats show today's numbers in green. The foot of Settings links to sluka.app.

Fixed

  • Korean words hold together: 더보기란과 is 더보기 · 란 · 과, and 뭔데, 건가요, 누군데 open their noun.
  • Japanese potentials count as their verb: 話せる is coloured by 話す, and grades land on the word you see.
  • Common Arabic words no longer filed under rare ones (يدي, وفي, ابدا).
  • A word you're learning keeps its colour inside a Known or Ignored phrase.
  • Chinese and Cantonese words you joined by hand show their reading in subtitles and on pages too.
  • Short subtitle lines of words shared with English ("Si te acuerdas de ella.") get their words back.
  • VK Video auto-captions show each line once.
  • With SlukaCC off, YouTube's own keys (← → ↑ ↓ K) work again in the player.
  • A key bound to + works, and the space bar can no longer be taken as a key.
  • A tab that lost touch with Sluka after an update now says so, with a Reload button.
  • The listening chip shows in embedded players and no longer jumps away from the mouse.
  • SlukaCC's word popup no longer jumps below the line when the AI check answers.
  • Answering "Count as…" on a show still playing adds its time to the day's total too.
  • Phone: Chinese PDFs that said "could not be decoded" open, and so do password-protected PDFs.

0.6.4 13 October 2026

Before you update the extension downloaded from this page (the Chrome Web Store version isn't affected): from this version it keeps one ID whatever folder you unzip it into. Getting there changes its ID once, now, even if you replace the same folder, and the browser then sees a new extension with empty storage. Back up first (Settings → Sync & backup → Back up now), update, then restore the backup. Drop the folder with your book files onto the Books shelf and each book goes back where it was. Saved web articles can't be added back from a file.

New

  • Anki, both ways. Settings → Anki sends the words you're learning to Anki, at the levels you tick: the word on the front; its reading, its meaning (yours if you wrote one) and the sentence you met it in, with the word in bold, on the back. The word panel's Anki key, or F, puts one word into a deck for picked words. Known or Ignored suspends the card. Off to begin with: a card that matures in Anki (21 days) makes its word Known. On the computer it needs Anki with the AnkiConnect add-on; on the phone it works through AnkiDroid.
  • Your own frequency list: Settings → Languages → Frequency list reads a .txt or .csv, commonest word first, in place of Sluka's for that language. SlukaCC's 1x–8x, the word panel's rank, Most common, Mark known and the Frequent counts all follow it. It travels with sync and backups.
  • Could also be: under the headword, the other words a spelling may be (caillasses: caillasser). Pick one and that spelling is filed under it from now on, on every page and device.
  • Pause Sluka in one tab, from the toolbar menu. The button says OFF on that tab until you resume. Computer only.
  • While listening time is counted, a small chip in the top-left corner of the video shows today's total. Amber, "Held", when the title doesn't say which language it is. Settings → Watch & Listen turns it off. On the phone the notification icon turns into headphones instead.
  • 0 puts the open word back to New, and so does clicking the level that's already lit. On the phone the word bar lights the open word's level; tap it to send the word back to New.
  • Auto-pause only at lines with new words: a switch under Auto-pause, in Settings → SlukaCC and in the player menu.
  • Books: add many at once by picking several files or dropping whole folders. A file that matches a book on the shelf whose file is missing puts it back in place.

Changed

  • Only the languages you tick in Settings → Languages I'm learning count as studied. Nothing else adds a language any more, and menus, SlukaCC and Progress list only ticked ones. Records of the others are kept.
  • Polyglot stats: Today, Yesterday, Last week, Last month, Last year and All time, for known words, words read and time listened.
  • Imported words and Mark known no longer count as words learned today on the scoreboard, in Polyglot or in the island's tally. Totals still count them, and imports made before this version are recognised too.
  • Dragging across words shows Sluka's own mark instead of the browser's blue. Saved phrases can be up to 12 words, and clicking a word inside one opens that word, with the phrase as a row on top.
  • W opens SlukaCC's word list and pauses the video; while the list is on screen the arrows step through it. Shift+W is gone, and the controller's R+Y now presses W.
  • Game controller: Cycle steps through Ignored: New → 1–4 → Known → Ignored → New.
  • The folded progress card shows the video's difficulty.
  • Thumbnail counts say "Counted after 14:32" when it's Sluka's own pace holding them back, not YouTube.
  • French: nouns are no longer filed under verbs. élèves opens élève, caillasses opens caillasse, and about 150 words such as porte, aide and livre are filed as themselves. Grades you gave under the verb stay there. Switching porte back to the verb comes in a later version.
  • Settings → Appearance says what the levels mean: only you move a word, or Anki if you let it.

Fixed

  • Phone: touch controls hid themselves with no controller connected.
  • Linux: a controller's D-pad did nothing on pads Chrome doesn't recognise.
  • Vietnamese words were sometimes filed under a Chinese character (liêng under 靈).
  • Russian: a Korean name inside Russian text was highlighted as a word, and a Russian video with some Hangul in its title was judged Korean. Latin words inside Russian, Ukrainian and Greek text are no longer highlighted either.
  • SlukaCC: Down didn't play the video on once no word was open.
  • Settings: a switch kept showing its old position after "Don't show again".

0.6.3 12 October 2026

New

  • Words → Tools → Import from LingQ → Import known words from my LingQ account: every word you marked known in LingQ, also the ones that never were a LingQ, which no export contains. Sluka reads it in a LingQ tab you are signed in to, and stops at the first refusal. It's an unofficial route that can stop working; the CSV import is still there below it. Computer only.
  • On YouTube's search: a Translate button beside the search box searches for what you typed in the language you're reading, and a Subtitles button keeps only videos with real subtitles. On the computer, with word counts on, a bar above the results sorts them by fewest new words or most words you're learning, and hides videos with too many new words.
  • Scoreboard: click a reader to see their stats, all time and per language, over Today to 1 y. The site has a Scoreboard tab in its top bar.
  • Game controller: R+Y (Shift+W on the keyboard) walks SlukaCC's word list, row by row, and grades from it. Sliders in Settings → Game controller set how far one press scrolls a page or the word panel.

Changed

  • Common-words lists hold 8,000 words instead of 6,000: Most common, Mark known, SlukaCC's 1x–8x and the word panel's rank all reach further. Arabic ends at 7,896. Turkish is counted from a fuller list, so its order changes: verbs move up.
  • Books: each book on the shelf gets the same word chip as a YouTube thumbnail, with the share of its different words that are new and its new, frequent, learning and known counts.
  • SlukaCC: on a blurred line, the arrow keys, the D-pad and the phone's side taps uncover only the word they open, like the mouse does. E still shows the whole line.
  • SlukaCC: the short notes after each press ("Known · …") can be turned off in the ⋯ menu → More and in Settings → SlukaCC.
  • Phone: with a game controller connected, the word bar and SlukaCC's tap zones step aside. Android only.
  • Phone: YouTube videos no longer play by themselves in their thumbnails on Home and in search results. Android only.

Fixed

  • Vietnamese: words YouTube's captions wrote with a wrong tone mark (đám mê for đam mê) were split in two; they're one word now and open the real word. Subtitle lines are no longer cut through the middle of a word.
  • Saving a phrase in YouTube full screen brought up YouTube's "More videos" grid over the picture.

0.6.2 11 October 2026

New

  • Settings → Sync & backup → Sync through Google Drive, step by step: put the backup folder in Google Drive on every device and their words reach each other anywhere, not just on the same wifi. Drive for desktop on the computer, the free FolderSync app on the phone. Sluka itself never talks to Google; a green tick is a step it has seen done.
  • Words → Tools → Import from a text file: a .txt list of words you know, one a line or split by commas, all filed as Known. A meaning after a tab or " - " is kept as your meaning. Reads Anki's Notes in Plain Text export and lists saved by Notepad or Excel. It shows the count and the first 8 words before saving anything, and turns away books, subtitle files and other imports' exports.
  • Progress → Polyglot stats compares languages over a span: Today, 7 d, 30 d, 3 m, 6 m or 1 y, by known words, words read or time listened, with what the span added. Reading and listening count every synced device.
  • Progress → Listening's history is per language: each language lists only what you listened to in it. Older tracks are sorted by the language of their title.
  • SlukaCC: H turns Hide lines you know on and off. Shift+H still switches highlights. Computer only.
  • SlukaCC on Crunchyroll: every subtitle language listed by name from the start, Crunchyroll's own subtitles hidden while SlukaCC shows, the next episode and dub switches followed.

Changed

  • SlukaCC: out of full screen, the word panel is back above the subtitles, as in full screen. Under the line, as in 0.6.1, it could be cut short with "Save as my meaning" below the window. With a mouse, the box for your own meaning (Google's translation, your field, Save) is always shown whole. Computer only.
  • Word counts on YouTube thumbnails and beside the like button are off for new installs. They ask YouTube the way its phone app does; Settings → Watch & Listen says so and turns them on. Installs that had them keep them.
  • The LingQ import reads its CSV file only. The API key route is gone, so Sluka never contacts LingQ's server. Imported words come in as Known.

Fixed

  • A second phone given the computer's code waited forever: the computer synced only one phone. It syncs any number now and passes what one phone brings on to the others, in under a second while the computer is on. With two or more, the Sync card lists each phone with its own status and a Remove.
  • On YouTube, readings (pinyin, jyutping, furigana) are drawn only in the subtitles. Over the titles beside thumbnails they cut the titles off.
  • Phone: YouTube's top home-feed video no longer plays in its thumbnail the moment the YouTube tab opens. Later previews play as before. Android only.
  • Phone: Sync with this device or Restore on a backup showed "Restored 12 words." for a moment, then lost it. It stays now.
  • Russian: stress marks in a dragged phrase (верстовы́е столбы́) sat beside their letters in the word panel instead of over them. Computer only.

0.6.1 10 October 2026

New

  • The word panel is slimmer. A Look up menu (the book button) replaces the row of dictionary links, so on первобытных the panel goes from 395 to 180 px tall and the meaning gets a third of it instead of a tenth. T still opens the first site. Settings → Appearance → Word panel has Size (Small to Extra large), Pronunciation, Dictionary links (in a menu or as a line), Spacing and, on a computer, Grade buttons. The panel no longer grows and shrinks with browser zoom.
  • Read in Sluka: a page's article on its own, with its pictures, over the site, light or dark, A− and A+ for the text size. Shift+L, the book button on the island, Read in Sluka in the toolbar menu, or ⋮ in the app. Esc or Back closes it and the site is where you left it. Every article you open goes on the shelf.
  • Drag across words to look up a phrase, now in every language. In a language with spaces, up to 6 words open the word panel for the phrase; pick a level or write a meaning and it is saved as one word, lit up wherever it appears (в общем, in spite of). A longer selection, up to 300 characters, gets a small Google translation card. The selected text is sent to Google.
  • Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Thai: drag across part of a word cut too long, 图书馆 out of 图书馆学习, and the panel opens on just that part; on the phone the arrows take a character off either end. A word you built yourself has Split into words in its panel.
  • SlukaCC: pointing at a blurred subtitle uncovers only the word under the pointer, with its colour and reading. E still uncovers the whole line.
  • SlukaCC: word meanings stand over each word instead of under it. Under a blur, the words that have a meaning stay sharp while the meanings are on Show ("Sharp words with a meaning", on by default, in Settings and the menu's Word colours).
  • SlukaCC: when the site's translation is missing, fails, comes back in the wrong language or covers under 60% of the lines, SlukaCC asks Google Translate for the lines itself, and the menu says "English · Google". On the Cantonese video that started this, YouTube translated 525 of 1,667 lines. The lines are sent to Google; switch it off in Settings → SlukaCC.
  • SlukaCC: , and . move a video's subtitles 0.25 s earlier or later, for a track that runs behind or ahead of the voice. Also in the menu under More → Subtitle timing, which works on the phone. Remembered per video and track on YouTube and Netflix.
  • SlukaCC: an optional progress card in the picture's top left corner (More → Progress card, off by default). Folded it shows the video's language, the share of new words and the new, frequent, learning and known counts. Opened, your level, how much of what is said you know (Easy to Hard) and the words you made known today. It replaces the word-count chip in the player's corner.
  • SlukaCC: drop a subtitle file (.srt, .vtt, .ass, .ttml) on a video and it becomes the line, with words to click. A second file in another language becomes the translation. More → Load subtitle file does the same. Not on YouTube or Netflix. Computer only.
  • SlukaCC: Shift+E and Shift+Q jump to the next and previous line with a new or learning word in it, as Shift+D and Shift+A do for frequent words. The line plays from its start and no word opens.
  • SlukaCC: Colour new words has two smaller steps, 0.25x and 0.5x, for when 1x still lights up too much. With 800 Known, 0.25x colours the new words among the 925 most common.
  • SlukaCC: out of full screen, the word panel opens under the subtitle and its translation instead of over the picture. On a short window a clicked panel scrolls the page down once to fit. Full screen and Netflix keep it above the line. Computer only.
  • SlukaCC: the arrow keys open a word in the small card, the one hover shows; a click still opens the big panel. Settings → SlukaCC has Popup on hover and Popup with the arrows, Small or Big. Computer only.
  • The word counts on YouTube's thumbnails open out with ⌄: how much of what is said you know, how hard the video is (Easy to Hard) and the known, learning and new bar. When the counts pause, the island says so and stays until you answer; a VPN makes pauses more likely. Settings → Watch & Listen → Tell me when word counts pause turns it off. Computer only.
  • Read a book: a language picker top right of the start screen, a count of the books on the shelf, and Dark pages under Aa for dark paper whatever the theme.
  • Watch a video lists your last 10 videos with their language and where you stopped, and picking one again brings its subtitles back. On the phone, Watch & Listen has Your videos: play your own video files with SlukaCC, and they keep playing past Home and the lock screen.
  • Game controller: hold R and press B to step the open word through New, 1, 2, 3, 4 and Known; the level you stop on is saved 1.2 s after the last press. Holding R or L gives every other button a second layout, with tabs for both in Settings → Game controller.
  • Words → Tools → Import from HanziHero reads HanziHero's words.csv and files each word at its level, stages 7–10 and skipped as Known. Chinese only.
  • The word panel names a word's place up to the 15,000th most common (was 6,000).
  • A public scoreboard you can join: Settings → Licence → Scoreboard, off until you switch it on. It shares words read, time listened and known and learning counts per language and day under a name your licence claims once, never which words, pages or videos. See it at sluka.app/scoreboard or Progress → Scoreboard.
  • Settings → Sync & backup: "How to use the passphrase" walks through backing up your API keys step by step.

Fixed

  • Words read was far too high: 131 words read of a Wikipedia article counted as 766. It now counts only the article's text, at your own reading pace, and skips menus, promo boxes, cookie banners and an article re-read the same day. Expect lower daily numbers, so you may want to lower a words-read goal. Past days are left as they are. Settings → Reading → Count words read can limit it to Sluka's reader and books.
  • Counting by dictionary form, marking допрашиваю Known saved only допрашивать and lost the form you met. Both are kept now: the Words list shows the forms you met under each word, a search for any form finds it, and switching how a language counts is instant and loses nothing.
  • After Delete progress on one device, Keep it here on another brought the words back but not the deleting device's earlier days, so the calendars and streaks never agreed again. They agree now, with three or four devices and through the backup folder too.
  • A web page's own scripts could start read aloud, press Sluka's keys or pass for the phone app. They can't any more. On a computer, keys that other extensions fake into a page no longer reach Sluka; AutoHotkey, Karabiner and JoyToKey still work.
  • Vietnamese: other spellings of a word are one word, so xịn sò opens xịn xò, and tòa nhà, đại úy and the like no longer come apart. 376 missing words were added. Join syllables into a word yourself by dragging, or with ◀ ▶ in the panel on the phone. Grades saved under another spelling move onto the headword.
  • Korean words no longer fall apart into lone syllables: 샤브샤브 was 샤 | 브 | 샤 | 브, 있나 was 있 | 나. About 40 spoken endings (나, 군, 구나, 냐, 라고, ㅂ시다 …) are recognised.
  • Thai: acronyms (ปตท, กสทช), foreign names (สมิธ) and roads (ถนนพระราม 4) stay one word, and the panel says what they are instead of translating the pieces.
  • Chinese and Cantonese: 时, 却 and 这里 opened a bare "variant of" row; they open 時, 卻 and 這裡 with their meanings. Words whose entry only points elsewhere show what it points at: 从 "from", 比 "compare", under SlukaCC's words, in the Words list and in the character breakdown.
  • Readings (pinyin, jyutping, furigana) no longer show over level-4 words under the default scope.
  • Chinese: a character on its own showed the first reading the dictionary listed, close to alphabetical: 读 was dòu, 行 háng, 着 zhāo. It now shows the commonest: dú, xíng, zhe.
  • SlukaCC's Follow the video's language switches only between the languages you study. A video in any other language leaves you where you are and adds nothing to your list.
  • SlukaCC: some red words could not be hovered or clicked when an invisible layer from YouTube or another extension lay over that part of the line. Computer only.
  • At browser zoom of 133% and up, the word panel sat on top of the word you clicked. Computer only.
  • Long words in the Words list broke mid-word or pushed the level off a phone's screen. They shrink to fit now, and only one too long even then wraps, at a syllable.
  • Searching Settings for "lingq", "language reactor" or "goal" showed an empty list.
  • Settings → Voice: ElevenLabs said the key was rejected when it lacked the Voices permission, and "returned 402" for library voices a free plan can't use. The messages say what's wrong now, and free plans don't see library voices.

Update the extension and the app together: word forms are now saved beside each word, and an older app would leave them out.

0.6.0 7 October 2026

New

  • SlukaCC: a Words tab beside the transcript lists the video's new and learning words, most said first. Filter by New, Learning or both. Click a word for its panel, right-click to mark it, ▶ to jump to the next line that has it. W opens it, and so does the menu's "Words in this video". On the phone it opens as a sheet under the video.
  • SlukaCC: hovering a word shows the word and its meaning, large, with up to two more meanings under it. The definitions are one click away, in the word panel as before. Computer only.
  • SlukaCC: the line buttons (back, replay, next, loop) sit in a faint column just right of the sentence, out of the way until the mouse comes near. The key letters show on the button you point at. Computer only.
  • SlukaCC: Auto-resume. When the video stops at the end of a line, by auto-pause or on a word you opened, marking the line's last new word plays it on. Shift+K does too. On by default; the switch sits next to Auto-pause in SlukaCC's menu and in Settings → SlukaCC. Turned off, both kinds of stop wait for you.
  • Game controller support: Sluka reads the 8BitDo Zero 2 / Micro ("Anki remote") by itself, with no JoyToKey or Karabiner. Each button runs a Sluka action, with one layout for reading and one for SlukaCC. Settings → Game controller has a setup guide for the computer and for the phone.
  • The word panel takes Korean and Japanese words apart: 파란색이에요 is 파란색 "blue" + 이 (이다, copula) + 에요 (polite ending), 足りなかった is 足り + なかっ (negative) + た (past). Grammar parts get their name and a one-line note. Click a part to open it; the breakdown stays.
  • The AI check gives a short meaning along with its verdict. "Save as its meaning" keeps it as the word's meaning, marked ✦ AI, on hover, under SlukaCC's words and on the phone.
  • The island has a tally of the words you marked Known today: the ‹ at its left end. Switch between all words and only the frequent ones.
  • Progress → Calendar: hovering a day also shows how many words you marked Known that day, and how many of them are frequent words.
  • Settings → Languages → Delete progress wipes one language: words, meanings, imported words, statistics (streak, calendar, listening minutes), goals and counting. Books, settings and other languages stay. The button stays locked until you type DELETE. Your other devices ask before they follow: Not now, Keep it here, or Delete here too.
  • Chinese and Cantonese: a word whose dictionary entry only says "variant of 真" or "see 西鄉縣" now shows that word's meanings, in the word panel and on SlukaCC's hover card.

Fixed

  • SlukaCC with auto-pause on slow speakers: the line ended halfway through what she was saying, and then the subtitles went blank while she kept talking. Lines now last as long as the speaker takes.
  • SlukaCC on YouTube's automatic subtitles: lines ran up to 9 seconds behind the speech on some videos, and sentences were split across lines ("Все они превосходно" | "воюют. Как бы то ни было…"). On a Japanese talk show, the share of speech with its line on screen went from 52% to 81%. On a Russian film, 49 split sentences are down to 4.
  • SlukaCC's auto-pause stops in the speaker's pause instead of after the first sound of the next line. On subtitles that give one time per sentence, it stops at sentence ends, and listens for a real pause near the guessed breaks. Two Japanese talks went from 101 stops to 36, most of them now in a pause.
  • SlukaCC on Japanese automatic subtitles that come a sentence at a time: [音楽] no longer cuts a sentence in half or shows up as a word, sentences stamped late go up when they are said, and the translation keeps to its own sentence. Speech on screen while it is said went from 82% to 88% over five stretches of three talks.
  • SlukaCC plays on at once when the mouse leaves a word it was waiting on (was about 0.7 s).
  • SlukaCC kept the video waiting while the mouse rested on empty picture next to the subtitles. Only the subtitles themselves, the popup and the path between them hold it now.
  • Watch a video: every click in SlukaCC's menu closed it.
  • Dictionary links opened a new tab instead of the lookup window in tabs that were open when Sluka updated or restarted. Worse, words marked in those tabs were coloured but not saved. Sluka now takes over open tabs after a restart.
  • Shift+click on a word inside a link opened the link when the link is drawn over its own text (headlines on bbc.com/zhongwen).
  • News sites that hide the article at first, open with menus or put ads in frames now get read. 144 of 149 Japanese news sites highlight. On the phone the reader starts as the page loads, not after every advert. Text inside web components is read (msn.com), and nikkei.com works in the app.
  • French pages no longer wake Turkish, and Spanish pages no longer wake Italian.
  • Japanese names in old-form kanji with no kana (黒澤明, 渡邊) are read as Japanese, not left out as Chinese.
  • Korean 이에요 and 예요 open 이다, not "Not in the dictionary".
  • Japanese: 食べさせられました is one word, not 食 | べ | させられました.
  • Pressing Escape right after → sometimes brought the next word's panel back, and Up then marked it Known.

Update the extension and the app together.

0.5.9 5 October 2026

New

  • Special words on pages and in books: Settings → Appearance → Colours → Special words, off by default. Names and places are filled in SlukaCC's purple while they are new, so you don't take them for words to learn. Mark one and it takes its grade's colour. The colour is SlukaCC's own: change it in either place. Numbers stay plain on pages.
  • SlukaCC: Hide lines you know works with the subtitle on Show too, not only on Blur. A line where you know every word doesn't show, translation included. E brings it back (on the phone, a swipe down on the left of the picture), and auto-pause plays on past it.
  • The offer to download a language's voice recordings first points to the cloud voice: with your own API key in Settings → Voice, every word and sentence is spoken in a natural voice and the download is not needed. Download opens after OK.

Fixed

  • Pages with Chinese and Japanese side by side, a Discord server for one, are read a block at a time. The Japanese reader leaves Chinese messages alone (所以 was printed ゆえん), and the Chinese reader leaves Japanese ones alone (no pinyin over kanji). A Chinese comment that ends in a kaomoji, ヽ(°▽°)ノ, still counts as Chinese.
  • The Japanese voice says a word the way its furigana reads it. Conjugated words and one-kanji stems (行きました, the 見 of 見に行く) went to the voice as bare kanji, which it sometimes read in Mandarin. Readings the dictionary lacks (真中 as まんなか) and 一ヶ月 are right too. In 7,838 test clicks the voice disagreed with the furigana 31% of the time; now 2.6%, nearly all of them words with no furigana to follow.
  • SlukaCC word meanings: one short meaning under each word, your own and imported ones too. A meaning you imported showed its whole list (你 · 你们自己 · 感谢); it shows the first one now. The word panel still has all of it.

Update the extension and the app together.

0.5.8 5 October 2026

New

  • Sluka's interface in Traditional Chinese as written in Taiwan (繁體中文), with Taiwan's words: 影片, 軟體, 設定. A browser or phone set to Chinese for Taiwan, Hong Kong or Macau, or to Cantonese, has it ready in the first question. Machine-made like the others, and not yet checked by a native speaker.
  • Progress shows your level, A0 to C2, from the words you know: the next level, and how many words are still to go. It is a reading estimate only. "How this is worked out" lists the six levels for the language, counted the way you count it. On the phone too.
  • SlukaCC: hover a known or ignored word on the subtitle and its meaning opens, as for a new word, and the video waits at the end of the line. It opens only once the mouse moves onto the word, so a mouse resting on the subtitles does not stop the video on every line. The preview is also smaller and sits just above the line. Computer only.
  • SlukaCC with Your own colours: in Chinese and Cantonese, a word you only know in the other script (这里 known, 這裡 on screen) gets a colour of its own, pink by default, instead of the Known colour.
  • Korean particles say what they do. The 70 commonest, 을, 를 and 에서 among them, open an entry with what they mark and an example. Before, 을 opened 乙, "the second party".

Fixed

  • SlukaCC showed no Korean line on some YouTube videos: when the subtitles switched on were a track with a name of its own, such as a channel's English ones, the request for Korean came back empty.
  • Korean is read by where a piece stands in its chunk: 일 at the start is "work", not 이다; 나는 and 난 are "I", not 나다; 하고 and 든 after a word are the particles; 있죠 and 했죠 are read; 마셔 is 마시다.
  • Korean, counting every form: Most common, Mark known and the frequent counts no longer list a word with its particle stuck on (집에, 말을), or under the wrong dictionary word (안 under 알다).
  • Japanese: some common words never turned known when marked, because the grade was saved under another word: まず as む, 入れる as 入る. About 90 of the 6,000 commonest words were affected.
  • The cloud voice says Japanese kanji words in Japanese. 先生 was often said in Mandarin; the voice now gets the word's reading, せんせい.
  • SlukaCC: YouTube's auto-generated Cantonese subtitles are read as words, not one character at a time. The % new chip on Cantonese videos counts words too, including videos counted before the update.
  • Watch a video: SlukaCC's button, menu and transcript sat below the window, and dragging the subtitles got stuck. They are over the picture now.
  • Watch a video in full screen had no subtitles. Full screen now keeps SlukaCC's line, menu, word panel and transcript. Use the button in the picture's top-right corner or double-click the picture; Esc leaves.
  • YouTube Shorts get no word-count chip, and Sluka no longer asks YouTube about them, which leaves more of the hour's 120 videos for the rest.
  • SlukaCC on Thai videos: the readings row in the menu names Paiboon.

Update the extension and the app together.

0.5.7 4 October 2026

New

  • Sluka's own interface in 12 languages: English, Russian, Chinese (simplified), Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, Spanish, Italian, French, German, Portuguese (Brazil) and Polish. The dashboard asks once which one you want, and Settings → Appearance → Language changes it later. The translations are machine-made, and no native speaker has checked them yet.
  • SlukaCC: word meanings under the subtitle's words, a word or two each, from the dictionary or from your own meaning. Off by default: Word meanings in SlukaCC's menu. They show, blur or hide like the subtitle, and E uncovers one layer per press: sentence, meanings, translation.
  • SlukaCC: special words. Names, places and numbers written in digits get a colour of their own while they are new. Off by default, under Word colours. ← and → skip them.
  • SlukaCC: Hide lines you know. With the subtitle on Blur, a line where you know every word does not show at all. E still shows it, and Auto-pause plays on past it.
  • SlukaCC: Shift+D and Shift+A jump to the next or previous line with a frequent word in it and play it from the start, still blurred, instead of opening the word.
  • SlukaCC: A and D together replay the line and keep it blurred while the mouse rests on the subtitles. Move away and back to see it.
  • SlukaCC's button is a gear for the menu and Sluka's icon with ON or OFF, which switches SlukaCC on or off in one click on the computer.
  • SlukaCC: a font for each language. Turn off "Use this font for every language" and each language keeps the font you gave it.
  • SlukaCC: with Your own colours, learning levels 1 to 4 are shades of the Learning colour, 1 strongest and 4 faintest.
  • Books have a Words tab beside Contents and Bookmarks: each chapter's % new, word count and new, learning and known words. Tap a chapter to go there.
  • Japanese readings can be romaji: Settings → Languages → Japanese → Notation above the characters. Every word gets one, kana included, and the particles は and へ read wa and e.
  • Translate words into, per reading language, in Settings → Languages → Dictionary. Google Translate, the AI check and SlukaCC's translation line answer in that language, even one no dictionary covers yet.
  • Definitions in Chinese for English, Russian, Swedish, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Italian, Polish, Dutch, Finnish, Greek, Danish and Turkish.
  • When you read definitions in a language other than English and a word only has English ones, Google Translate's meaning shows at once, marked Google. While a new set of definitions is being set up, the word panel says so and shows how far it has got.
  • Google Translate's voice in the word panel's translate box: a speaker beside the text and one beside the translation.
  • Dictionary links open in a small window beside the page on the computer, reused for the next word, and as a sheet over the app on the phone.
  • The AI check gives an example sentence and its translation when the word is real.
  • Read aloud: the speed button opens a list of speeds instead of stepping through them.
  • The word panel shows a word's rank larger, and puts the dictionary's meanings on a grey card.

Fixed

  • The e-reader no longer gets slower the further you read. Chapters far from the screen are put away and drawn again when you come back: in a 200,000-word test book, looking up a word near the end went from 3.6 s to 0.2 s. The bar's "new" counts the whole book, Know all marks the chapter you are in, and the next book you open starts from its own count.
  • Export and Import use one format. Export saves what the automatic backup saves, without your licence and API keys. Import reads exports, automatic backups from any device (the one Brave writes to Downloads\Sluka included) and exports from older versions. On the phone, Export opens a Save dialog; before, it saved nothing.
  • Videos whose uploader sends every caption twice, such as MrBeast's, show each line once.
  • The speaker says the word as it is written on the page: tengo, not tener.
  • Russian printed stress picks the word: у́стали in без у́стали is у́сталь, "fatigue", and marking it marks у́сталь, not уста́ть. Dictionary links search for a stress-marked word without the marks.
  • English: 62 of the 6,000 commonest words opened another word's entry. "as" opened "a", "his" opened "hi", "news" opened "new". Each has its own now, so a few may show up as new.
  • Google Translate: after a refusal Sluka waits before asking again, and keeps every answer for 30 days, so a word you have opened before costs no new request.
  • Cantonese with ElevenLabs as the cloud voice comes back in Cantonese; words such as 銀行 were said in Mandarin. Cantonese clips saved before are fetched again once. ElevenLabs is now the recommended cloud voice.
  • Thai place names and people's names stay whole and have entries: บางนา is "Bang Na, a district (Bangkok)", not "some" + "rice field".
  • Korean names are no longer cut into made-up words: 민수가 is 민수 + 가.
  • SlukaCC: the subtitle and the translation each sit in a box just bigger than the text, instead of one box wider than both.
  • SlukaCC: a word you only hover keeps its preview open while the mouse goes up to it, and the video waits.
  • SlukaCC in Japanese: → no longer says "Nothing new in this line" on lines full of new words.
  • Long words in the computer's word panel get the panel's whole width instead of breaking two characters a line.

Update the extension and the app together: an export from 0.5.7 cannot be imported into 0.5.6.

0.5.6 3 October 2026

New

  • A Volume slider for everything Sluka says: cloud voice, recordings, the device voice and Read aloud. In Settings → Voice, and behind the speaker button on the read-aloud bar. It only turns down: 10–100%.
  • SlukaCC has its own category in Settings, grouped like the player menu: Subtitles, Word colours, Text & background, More.
  • The SlukaCC player menu is shorter: sizes, font and background sit under Text & background ›, the rest under More ›. It stays above the subtitle line.
  • On the phone, a ⋯ in SlukaCC's band opens the menu in one tap; turned sideways, the menu is a side sheet and the line moves clear of it.

Fixed

  • Marking the most common words as known can be undone: the message after Mark known has an Undo, which makes those words new again.
  • On the phone, the word panel gives most of its room to the meaning. The keys are symbols beside the word, and the reading and level share one line under it. Before, the meaning got one clipped line.
  • Hong Kong videos (zh-HK) read in Cantonese, or in Chinese if that is what you learn. YouTube's AI dubs are switched back to the original voice.
  • Chinese Most common and Mark known list each word once, in simplified. Traditional readers see the simplified form; the two scripts stay linked.
  • YouTube's word counts pause 10 minutes after a first refusal instead of an hour, and say so once.
  • Know all stays on Shift+K when an old backup or sync tries to put it back on Shift+A.
  • In full screen, SlukaCC's counter no longer covers the player's bar.

Update the extension and the app together.

0.5.5 3 October 2026

New

  • Three new languages: Dutch, Thai and Arabic, on the computer, on the phone and in SlukaCC. Arabic includes the dialects (Egyptian, Levantine, Gulf, Moroccan and more), with each meaning labelled by its dialect, and reads right to left. Thai shows readings over the text, and a Thai word the dictionary does not have is split word by word in the panel.
  • Cloud voice on your own key, in Settings → Voice. Gemini, ElevenLabs, Google Cloud, Azure or OpenAI says every word and sentence in a natural voice, in every language. The Sentence key or Shift+V reads the sentence a word is in. Anything already said is kept, so hearing it again costs nothing.
  • Read aloud: Sluka reads you the page or a book from where you are, underlining the sentence and marking each word as it is said. Start it with Shift+R, from the toolbar menu, from ⋮ on the phone or from Aa in the book reader. Time spent listening to it counts as listening.
  • Watch a video: play your own video file with its subtitle file, plus a translation file if you have one, with SlukaCC. Open it from Watch a video ↗ on the dashboard. It offers to continue where you left off. Computer only for now.
  • The e-reader has Contents, bookmarks (the ribbon) and a percentage in the corner, and a book reopens on the line where you left it.
  • The AI check can ask Gemini (the key is free), Claude, OpenAI or DeepSeek. Pick one in Settings → AI check.
  • Settings and API keys sync. Keys go to every device; settings go from computer to computer and from phone to phone. If you set a backup passphrase in Settings → Sync & backup, backups carry your keys too, locked by the passphrase.
  • The word panel says how common a word is, for example "158th most common", beside its level.
  • The Russian word panel shows where the stress falls: молоко́, or руки́ and ру́ки for a form said two ways.
  • SlukaCC: Shift+D and Shift+A jump to the next and previous frequent word you do not know yet. Know all moves to Shift+K.
  • SlukaCC: choose a font for the subtitles: Sans, Serif, Monospace or one you name.
  • Progress → Polyglot stats puts every language's known words side by side: yesterday, today and learned today, in total or among the frequent words.
  • A phrase can be up to 20 characters long instead of 12.

Fixed

  • Russian books and pages printed with stress marks (говоря́т) are highlighted.
  • The frequency lists leave out names such as John, 北京 and нью-йорк, so Most common, Mark known, SlukaCC's 1x to 8x and the frequent counts skip them too. Countries, months and nationalities stay.
  • Vietnamese's frequency list counts words, not syllables: Most common and Mark known give you bài viết rather than bài and viết.
  • On the phone, the reader starts on pages reached through a redirect, such as a mobile Wikipedia link.
  • On the phone, the ◀ ▶ arrows stay above the shelf while you write a meaning.
  • YouTube's word-count chips ask YouTube far less often, so YouTube no longer stops sending subtitles to your connection for an hour. Counts are kept for 30 days.
  • Read aloud works properly in Arabic and Thai: Google's Arabic voices, sentence breaks and word marking. When a voice model cannot speak a language, Sluka uses one that can and Settings says so.

Update the extension and the app together: keys and settings sync between them.

0.5.4 3 October 2026

New

  • Your own meanings: + Your meaning at the foot of the word panel, or M, writes one. It shows above the dictionary's, tagged Yours, on the computer, in SlukaCC and on the phone, and can be edited in Words too.
  • Translate in the word panel. A word the dictionary does not have is translated by Google Translate as it opens, and Save as my meaning keeps it. Any other word has a Translate button, or G. The automatic part can be switched off in Settings → Reading.
  • Links to dictionary sites under every word: about three per language to start with, more in Settings → Languages → Dictionary links, where you can also add your own. T opens the first. On the phone they open over the app, and Back returns to the word.
  • Choose how each language counts its words: every form filed under its dictionary form, as before, or every form a word of its own, so книгу and книга are two words. Each language asks the first time it is used, and Settings → Languages → Counting words changes it later. Languages already in use keep counting as before.
  • YouTube's word-count chips work for every language you are learning, not only the one Sluka is reading, with the language's badge first. A fourth number, frequent, counts the words among the language's 6,000 commonest that you do not know yet.
  • Playlists get chips too. A playlist's card counts its first 10 videos together, and the playlist's own page counts every video, above Play all.
  • SlukaCC: separate sizes for the subtitle and its translation, in SlukaCC's menu and in Settings.
  • SlukaCC on the computer: right-click a Known word to send it back to level 1. Right-click it again and it is Known again.
  • The Goals & streak card goes across the sync.

Fixed

  • "Day ends at" really ends the day. Reading and listening before that hour count towards the day before, so a session at 1 AM finishes yesterday and the streak no longer breaks at the hour.
  • Russian words printed without the dots on ё are found: денек reads as денёк, and еще and ещё are one word. Words saved without the dots move onto the dotted spelling, level and all.
  • Polish and Russian diminutives are words of their own. książka is no longer filed under księga, piłka (ball) no longer under pić (to drink), and стали no longer under сталь (steel).
  • Korean: 여자 is no longer filed under 이다, and 안, 말, 돈, 눈 and other common one-syllable words are words of their own and on the frequency list. Conjugations such as 해요 and 하세요 are no longer listed as words to learn.
  • Emoji and symbols such as ℹ️ ⚠️ ❤️ are no longer highlighted as words.
  • SlukaCC: auto-generated subtitles that YouTube sends as whole sentences, common in Japanese, stay on screen while the speaker talks, one row at a time instead of the whole sentence at once.
  • A video whose subtitles are all translations, such as a Chinese drama with only Italian and English subtitles, no longer gets a chip in a translation's language, and SlukaCC no longer switches Sluka into it.
  • On Android 15 the keyboard no longer covers a text box at the bottom of the screen.

Update the extension and the app together: meanings, the counting choice and the goals card sync between them.

0.5.3 2 October 2026

New

  • SlukaCC in the phone app's YouTube tab, worked by touch on the sides of the picture. Tap right for the next new word, left for the one before. Swipe up on the right marks the open word Known, on the left ignores it. Swipe down on the right closes it and plays on; on the left it uncovers a blurred line. The "?" in SlukaCC's menu shows the zones again.
  • On the phone, YouTube's own tab bar is back in the YouTube tab, and in full screen YouTube's controls stay out of the way of the word popup.
  • SlukaCC follows a video into its language: a Chinese video switches Sluka to Chinese, the Korean one after it to Korean, and the video plays on. A note over the video says so, with Back. YouTube and Netflix only; the switch is in SlukaCC's menu and in Settings.
  • The language can also be changed from the toolbar menu and from SlukaCC's menu, which lists the video's own subtitle languages first.
  • YouTube thumbnails say how much of a video is new: the share of its different words you have not met, and how many are new, learning and known. The same count sits beside the like button on the video's page, and in the player's corner if you switch it on in SlukaCC's menu. Only on videos with subtitles in the language.
  • SlukaCC on the computer: right-click a word to mark it Known without opening it. Shift+A at the video marks only the line on screen; at the page around it, it asks first. A slider sets how solid the subtitles' background is.
  • SlukaCC on the computer: a word opened by a click closes by itself once the mouse leaves its popup, the subtitles and the gap between them, and the video plays on.
  • SlukaCC's Colour new words goes by how many words you know, as Language Reactor's 1x to 8x: 1x colours new words up to 500 places past that number in the language's frequency list, 8x up to 4,000. New words further down are drawn faint and still open on a click. R steps through the choices.
  • Words → Most common: the language's 6,000 commonest words in bands of a hundred, each in the colour of how well you know it, and gradable from there. Mark common words known is now its own tab, Mark known, with the same wall under the slider showing which words it takes in.
  • Progress → Numbers splits into Total, Frequent and Non-frequent.
  • Japanese has a real frequency list, counted from film and TV subtitles, so the wall, Mark known and the colouring above work for it. Its commonest 1,000 words now cover 78% of the words in subtitles; the old list's covered 8%.
  • Imports from LingQ and Language Reactor, and imported words do not count towards the free 1,000. LingQ's CSV has no levels; with your LingQ API key the words come across at your LingQ levels. The key is used for that one import and not kept. Inflected forms land on their dictionary word: parlato lights up as parlare.
  • The AI key goes across the sync: a computer or phone without one gets the other's. It never replaces a key that is already there.
  • Listening: one button answers No for every waiting show that is not in the language.

Fixed

  • The phone app no longer freezes. A dictionary being copied in, the pronunciation check and saving could each stall every page, sometimes for seconds. Marking a word went from 560 ms to about 200.
  • SlukaCC no longer disappears when YouTube's caption server is slow, which it is now and then for 6 to 12 seconds, often right after signing in. If the subtitles still fail on the phone, a line says so, and a tap tries again.
  • A word marked Known no longer goes back to New when a sync ran at the same moment.
  • On YouTube on the computer, the title no longer stays on the previous video's or goes blank.

Update the extension and the app together: the sync changes need both.

0.5.2 30 September 2026

  • SlukaCC on Netflix: the same two lines, keys and transcript as on YouTube. The transcript is a panel down the right side and stays in full screen. Netflix has no machine translation, so the translation under the line is another of the title's own subtitle tracks.
  • SlukaCC on most other video players too, with nothing written for any one site: TED, Vimeo, Dailymotion, archive.org, players built on hls.js, video.js or Shaka, and videos embedded in other pages, YouTube's included. There its button is a small pill at the top of the picture.
  • A video with subtitles in the language you are learning starts Sluka on a page that is not in it, such as a TED talk on an English page.
  • A player that only fetches its subtitles once they are switched on: switch them on there once, and SlukaCC takes over from then on.
  • On the computer, SlukaCC's switch covers every video. Pause while reading subtitles is now the phone app's only.
  • Turning SlukaCC off on YouTube no longer leaves YouTube's own captions on screen when you had them off.

0.5.1 30 September 2026

  • Japanese: the word panel gives a kanji the reading the furigana over it shows. It used to lead with the dictionary's first reading, which for a lone kanji was often a prefix or a suffix: 今 said こん, 城 じょう, 米 メートル.
  • Japanese: where two readings of a kanji are too close to call, the panel names both, the one over the word first: 下 · した・もと. The furigana still shows one.
  • Japanese: a counter reads the way the number before it makes it. 3本 is さんぼん, 30分 さんじゅっぷん, 3日 みっか, 4月1日 しがつついたち, and 10月 no longer reads つき.
  • Japanese: numbers written in kanji get furigana too: 三階 さんがい, 三日間 みっかかん.
  • After updating, the Japanese dictionary is copied in again, once.

0.5.0 29 September 2026

  • SlukaCC: Sluka's own subtitles on YouTube on the computer. The line in the language you are learning is coloured and clickable, with a translation under it. Each line can be shown, blurred or hidden, and E peeks. A, S and D go back a line, replay it or go on, Q pauses after every line, and a transcript sits beside the video.
  • SlukaCC: word colours show through a blurred line. Known or Ignore on a subtitle word keeps the video on its line, A and D together replay the line, and the arrows carry on from the word just marked.
  • Light mode is back: Settings → Appearance → Theme, with Match system, Light and Dark.
  • Sync pairs by itself while Settings → Sync & backup is open, and several computers can share one code. A change reaches the computer in about half a second and the phone in about three.
  • Highlight words (Settings → Appearance, or Shift+H) takes the colours off the page while every word still opens on a click.
  • With the 1,000 free words used, a grade that was not saved is no longer painted as if it had been, and the page says why, once.
  • A new icon, and Korean captions keep their space at a line break.

0.4.3 27 September 2026

  • On the phone, the word bar stays on web pages, YouTube and Spotify between words, as it does in a book. Grading with K or I no longer swaps the bottom bar in under your thumb. The bottom bar comes back on a scroll up, a pull down at the top, a tap on the top bar or a new page.
  • A word marked Known no longer turns blue again. Three causes, all fixed: pages kept open behind another never heard about the change, a grade made just before leaving a page was lost, and a sync could overwrite what the phone saved while it ran.
  • Update the extension and the app together: the sync fix needs both.

0.4.2 27 September 2026

  • Swedish words can be heard: 59,095 recordings, one per headword, downloaded when you ask for them (184 MB).
  • They are machine-made and some words come out wrong, the sj-sound most of all. In listening tests 90 of 100 common words and 19 of 24 rarer ones were right. The app says so where the download is offered.

0.4.1 26 September 2026

  • The toolbar button opens a menu: Never run on this site, or Run Sluka on it again, with Undo. Open dashboard brings forward the dashboard tab that is already open instead of opening another.
  • Reading options where you read: the switch for readings above the characters, and which words they go over, in the phone's ⋮ menu and the book reader's Aa panel.
  • The settings category Listening & video is now Watch & Listen, matching the phone's tab.
  • On the phone, the address bar shows just the site (bbc.com), YouTube's Open app button is gone, and app links open the app instead of "Webpage not available".

0.4.0 26 September 2026

  • A redesign of every screen: the dashboard, the toolbar menu, the book reader and the Android app. Dark only, for now.
  • The dashboard is four places: Home, Words, Progress and Settings. Listening moved into Progress, and Settings is eight categories with a search.
  • The Android app has a bottom bar instead of a drawer (Home, Read, Watch & Listen, Words, Progress), Settings behind a gear, a start page for the web and a ⋮ menu on websites.
